Massive Great Dane Stands up to Hug Ciara and People Swear He’s Actually a Horse

(MICHAEL TRAN / Getty Images)

Great Danes have earned the nickname “gentle giants,” but it’s easy to forget how much emphasis belongs on the “giant” part until they decide to stand up for a hug.

Superstar Ciara got a hilarious reminder while spending time with an enormous Great Dane. In the video, the singer gives him plenty of attention as he rises onto his hind legs and puts his front paws up toward her. Suddenly, this isn’t a person petting a dog. It looks more like two friends greeting each other at eye level.

And judging by Ciara’s reaction, she knows exactly how funny the situation has become.

Ciara’s Great Dane Friend Is Basically Her Height Standing Up

In the clip, Ciara laughs as the dog leans toward her, seemingly completely unaware that his version of asking for affection comes with a whole lot of Great Dane attached.

She reaches up to pet him while he remains standing, and the size difference becomes almost comical. Or perhaps the lack of a size difference does. Viewers certainly noticed.

“A whole Scooby Doo 😮,” one person declared, perfectly capturing what plenty of people were probably thinking. Another viewer had a different comparison: “That ain’t no dog, THAT’S A HORSE.” That comment earned thousands of likes in the screenshot, while others couldn’t get over seeing such an enormous dog casually standing beside Ciara. “It’s bigger than me omg no,” someone wrote.

Then there was the viewer who focused less on his size and more on what he appeared to want from the encounter: “Not that big ol’ baby standing up like he’s your man!” Big baby might actually be the most fitting description of all.

There’s something endlessly funny about enormous dogs behaving as though their size should have absolutely no effect on how affection works. This Great Dane isn’t keeping a dignified distance, since he can practically look Ciara in the eye. He wants attention, and apparently he’s willing to come up to her level to get it.

Giant Dogs Don’t Always Realize Just How Giant They Are

Part of the appeal is the contrast. A Great Dane can look imposing simply because of the breed’s tremendous height, then completely undermine that image by leaning in for affection like a much smaller pup. Dogs seem to have a special talent for making their size irrelevant when they want to be close to someone they trust.

One golden retriever recently highlighted that bond in a different way when he recreated a photo with his dad 10 years later. The years changed plenty about the pair, but seeing them together again made what hadn’t changed even sweeter.

Of course, being small doesn’t stop a dog from creating an equally big moment. A mini dachshund’s reaction after getting into trouble showed just how much personality can fit into a considerably shorter package.

Ciara’s new friend is working with much more real estate. Another commenter described Great Danes as “gentle giants,” and this interaction makes it easy to understand why the phrase sticks. For all the jokes about horses and Scooby-Doo, the towering dog seems most interested in being close enough to soak up some attention.

And when you’re tall enough to meet Ciara almost face-to-face, apparently there’s no reason to wait for her to bend down and give you a hug. Sometimes you just stand up and take one.

Art Teacher Gets Cat Registered as a Therapy Animal. Now He Roams the Hallways and Acts Like He Runs the Place (Exclusive)

Pinecone became a registered therapy cat after completing courses and an in-person evaluation

The Rhode Island middle school cat helps anxious students find quiet moments between classes

His owner, art teacher Kayleigh Smith, says Pinecone has strengthened the school community while teaching students empathy and boundaries

Pinecone the cat takes his job very seriously.

The 3-and-a-half-year-old pet serves as a therapy cat at a Rhode Island middle school where his owner, Kayleigh Smith, works as an art teacher.

When Smith got Pinecone, she immediately noticed how calm and gentle he was, and in September 2025, she asked her school administration if she could bring him in to help alleviate stress for students.

“I ran the idea by my principal and he seemed very supportive of it,” she tells PEOPLE. “I looked into organizations that support therapy animals and how to get an animal certified as a therapy animal.”

Before long, Pinecone officially became “a registered therapy animal” through a series of online courses. However, Smith, 36, notes that he also “had to take an in-person evaluation, which was pretty intense.”

“They have to be able to follow a lot of commands and do a lot of things, like walk through a crowd of people, or walk through a crowd that has medical equipment moving back and forth or loud noises and not be affected,” she explains.

Still, Pinecone passed with flying colors, and before she knew it, he was roaming the halls of her workplace.

“I submitted all of the paperwork to my district superintendent, and they were extremely supportive right from the start, and they approved it,” Smith shares.

Starting in January 2026, Pinecone has come to school with Smith about three times a week.

“He’s here for moral support and the vibes. He really helps kids so much with anxiety,” she shares. “Kids who are having a bad day will come into my classroom just to pet him and for a quiet moment. He’s really funny, and one of the reasons why he’s become so popular online is because he acts like he works at the building.”

“He has his little routines and will greet people by the door of the art room. He’ll act like he’s supervising the hallways because he’ll just walk through the hallways while people are going to their lockers,” she continues. “Sometimes he’ll stop and sniff inside what’s in somebody’s locker and we’ll joke that he’s making his rounds, checking to make sure everything is good.”

However, when he’s not checking in with students, he can often be found taking a cat nap.

Smith shares that the kids “love him,” which has “been the most amazing thing.”

“I didn’t anticipate the sense of community that he would create. My principal tells me that students come into the building on a daily basis asking him whether or not Pinecone will be there,” she shares. “They talk about Pinecone in other classrooms. They get excited to see him. He’s even helped open doors to conversations with students that I don’t think I would ever have, because they feel comfortable coming to me and telling me about their animals.”

“I don’t think I would have those conversations with the students if it weren’t for Pinecone,” Smith reiterates.

Since her classroom is his “home base,” Smith has fitted the space with cat scratchers, food, water and treats.

“So the majority of the day, he is in the art room. In between periods is when I will take him around the hallways, and he’ll do his hallway security duty or visit other classrooms. He’s never roaming alone,” Smith affirms.

Smith shares that having him at school with her is “therapeutic for me, too.”

“Some of my favorite moments with him are the quiet ones in between classes or during my prep. He’ll just be completely sprawled out on my desk and I’ll be brushing him or petting him. I think to myself that he’s just the most spoiled cat, but also how lucky am I that I get to have my cat here at work,” she tells PEOPLE. “Being able to share this part of my day with him at work is so special because teaching middle school can be chaotic and really busy and stressful, and he is truly therapeutic for me too.”

Although some people may be concerned about having a cat around kids, Smith says she “can fully trust him just around students.”

“He’s really made me realize that the small moments matter. The most meaningful moments in the school have been the quiet moments when a kid who’s really stressed out comes and knocks on my door and asks if they can come in to pet him for a second and have that quiet moment before the chaos of teaching and school,” Smith says.

While Pinecone loves people, Smith jokes that he looks “grumpy.”

“He has his two little teeth that stick out. I’ve used him as a learning experience with the kids because he’s like a funny reminder that appearances don’t tell the whole story and you can’t judge a book by its cover,” she shares. “When he first started coming to school, some kids had never pet a cat before or had never been near a cat. Some kids were a little bit scared of him.”

“He does have these really striking, bright, yellow eyes and the two little fangs; he looks like he’s grumpy, but that has also turned into a valuable learning experience,” she emphasizes. “He’s the most sweet, gentle, patient cat you’ll ever meet. Once kids start to get to know him, they realize that.”

Pinecone in his yellow vestCredit: Kayleigh Smith

Smith says the cat has been able to teach the students “empathy and boundaries, too.”

“Sometimes during class, the kids know if he is sleeping up on his cat tower, they have to ask me to pet him, and sometimes I might say no and say to them, ‘He needs his space.’ That’s just a boundary that kids should learn too,” she shares. “They’re allowed to tell other people that they need space. He teaches so many things.”

Students now bring him treats or toys from home and even draw portraits of Pinecone to give Smith, highlighting what a “sense of community he’s created.”

“He’s just helped change the school culture. He’s part of the school culture. People will joke and they’ll say ‘Pinecone for principal,’ or ‘Pinecone should be our mascot.’ He just really creates that sense of community,” Smith shares.

Snake Wrangler Catches Record-Breaking 18-Foot Python in Puerto Rico After It Targets a Pet Cat

People who experience ophidiophobia (a fear of snakes) may want to avoid heading to Puerto Rico anytime soon. It was just announced that a snake wrangler beat Puerto Rico's record recently when he captured a nearly 19-foot-long reticulated python.

Kevin Pavlidis, who goes by the handle Snakeaholic on Instagram, shared a photo from his record-breaking catch on Oct. 19. In the picture, eight adults had to stand shoulder to shoulder while holding up the snake. Pavlidis said that he didn't capture the beast alone, either. He also gave credit to proyectoreticpr, who he says helped him in his quest.

Now, his record-breaking find is going viral as he explains why Puerto Rico is trying to rid itself of the snakes in the first place, and how he is working hard to help restore balance to the island's ecosystem.

Man Stops Massive Python From Eating a Pet Cat

According to the post, the 18-foot, 4-inch snake was attempting to strangle a pet cat behind someone's house when Pavlidis was alerted. He says he then rushed to get to the house to begin hunting the reptile. "It took all my tracking skills and 20 minutes of searching to find this snake down in the jungle," he explained.

"I have been working extremely hard in Puerto Rico learning to understand how this species behaves, and they are shockingly different from Burmese," he added, explaining how these snakes are invasive to Puerto Rico the same way that Burmese pythons are in Florida. As such, he's working with conservation groups to help remove them so that native wildlife can continue to thrive.

Commenters Were Curious About the Process

A lot of people in the comments defended the snake, wanting to know why it had to be killed in the first place, prompting Pavlidis to respond. "State law provides very few options for what we can do with these snakes," he explained. "Reticulated pythons are labeled as a 'Prohibited Species,' so it is now illegal to keep them as pets in Puerto Rico."

Pavlidis went on to explain that it is also illegal to transport them within or off of the island, which leaves euthanasia as the only viable option for controlling the population.

According to SerpentResearch.com, the reason these snakes are so dangerous to the local ecosystem has to do with their large appetites. To satisfy their hunger, these snakes are eating a lot of birds in the area, including some that use the island as a stop along their migration path.

The website notes that these birds are also very important to ecosystems, since they help control insect populations, creating a domino effect where other animal or insect populations could grow out of control. Fortunately, it sounds like there's a team of conservationists working on removing the snakes using the American Veterinary Medical Association's guidelines for reptile euthanasia, although the specific euthanasia methods used in this case have not been independently verified.

Veterinarian Reveals Why Black Cats Struggle Every OctoberGabrielle LaFrankThu, October 22, 2026 at 1:45 AM UTC

As Halloween draws nearer, skeletons, pumpkins, and vampires are popping up everywhere. It’s the season of witches, scary movies, and black cats, though these spooky felines actually have a very complicated relationship with the beloved holiday.

As Dr. Eileen R. Adamo, Medical Affairs Consultant for PrettyLitter, explains, black cats face a number of surprising challenges in October. Shelter cats, strays, and even pets can feel these effects, which have surprisingly little to do with Halloween itself.

Why Do Black Cats Have a Bad Rap?

Most people have heard the idiom about black cats bringing bad luck, but cat parents and feline experts know that couldn’t be further from the truth. So how did this superstition begin?

These beliefs likely developed between the 15th and 18th centuries, when Europe and the Colonies were embroiled in a record number of witchcraft accusations, trials, and even executions. Black cats became famously associated with witches during this period, but for most of human history, people did not truly believe they caused bad luck.

Related: Tiny Black Kitten Found Hiding Beneath a Car Proves the Cat Distribution System Has Perfect Timing

“I don’t think many people would still actually believe that black cats bring bad luck,” Dr. Adamo agrees. “However, people do still seem to prefer (either consciously or subconsciously) cats of lighter colors. Despite knowing that black cats can bring just as much love, joy, and cat antics into a home, many people do not feel an immediate emotional draw to black cats.”

Why Black Cats Wait Longer in Shelters

Even though the belief that black cats are bad luck is nothing more than a myth, the statistic that they wait longer in animal shelters is entirely true. In fact, Dr. Adamo shared that, on average, black cats spend 24% to 40% longer waiting to be adopted.

Woman holding black catOR Images / Getty Images

“One very large shelter study concluded that black cats face adoption rates as low as 10% and euthanasia rates as high as 74.6%,” the veterinarian says. “Witnessing this disheartening pattern led rescue organization team members to wonder: why exactly do black cat adoptions fall below even the abysmal average adoption rates?”

The problem is that black cats are much harder to read than their lighter-colored companions. With an all-black face, it’s difficult to see a black cat’s facial expression and read their subtle feline body language, which can deter potential adopters.

Dr. Adamo explains, “When you look at a black cat in a shelter cage (or even more so, an online photo of a black cat in a shelter cage), you might interpret its neutral expression as ‘unfriendly’ or ‘sad’ simply because you can’t see its face as clearly.”

To help black cats get adopted, shelters and rescues can practice different lighting techniques when photographing adoptable pets. They can bring black cats to in-person adoption events and encourage potential adopters to meet the pets outside their cages before making a final decision.

Real October Dangers For Black Cats

As Dr. Adamo revealed, people no longer hold harmful superstitions about black cats, so why are they still at risk in October? Many animal shelters and rescues pause black cat adoptions during the month leading up to Halloween, and although this is meant to keep the cats safe, the veterinarian believes it does more harm than good.

Black cat rests on folded blanketGrace Cary / Getty Images

“Though there have been instances of adoption of black cats as Halloween ‘holiday props’, these adoptions are rare due to the careful screening processes employed at shelters,” she explains. “The real October risk for black cats is when shelters shut down adoptions during this month. This policy prevents them from being adopted, and since time is limited at most municipal shelters, this policy thereby increases their risk for euthanasia.”

Additionally, some people may see these cats as unavailable for adoption and believe it’s due to behavioral reasons. The pause on adoptions in October can actually increase the stigma around black cats, Dr. Adamo believes, especially because the idea that black cats (and dogs) may be harmed or ritually sacrificed during this time of year is purely a myth.

Overall, black cats can be incredible companions year-round, and their lower adoption rates are not their fault. Instead of pausing adoptions, rescues can give them their best shot at finding a forever home by taking better profile pictures and telling everyone who’s looking to adopt just how wonderful black cats can be.

Fabiola and Austin Kasperek spotted a mama bear and her cubs about 10 minutes into their Pigeon Forge ceremony

The Florida couple had not been warned about possible bear sightings at their Tennessee venue

Venue staff eventually scared the bears away after guests reacted with fear and excitement

Fabiola and Austin Kasperek were getting ready to say “I do,” when a mama bear and her two cubs crashed their big day.

On Thursday, Oct. 15, Fabiola and Austin tied the knot in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The Fort Myers, Florida-based couple tells PEOPLE that although they were getting married in black bear country, they hadn’t been warned about potential bear sightings.

“I didn’t even think bears would want to be around people, music and noise,” Fabiola, 33, shares. “I had not seen any bear photos either in any of the photos the venue had posted.”

About 10 minutes into the ceremony, Fabiola heard one of her guests gasp. As she looked up and around, she realized a mama bear and her cubs were right behind her officiant.

“I felt excited at first,” recalls the bride. “Like, oh my God, there are bears right there! I made a face and no one looked around. I waited a few minutes and I had to say, ‘I’m so sorry, I have to interrupt. There are three bears right behind you.’ ”

Fabiola says that her guests’ reactions were mixed. Some were scared, while others wanted to record the moment forever.

“Some people definitely freaked out,” she says. “Everyone turned back and gasped and some stood up to try to take photos. For some reason, I felt calm. I’m normally anxious but I just thought, ‘This will be remembered forever.’ ”

The bears only stayed for about five minutes. Eventually, the venue owner came out to help scare the bears away, and they left one by one.

Looking back on her wedding, Fabiola says she’ll never forget the once-in-a-lifetime moment of seeing a group of bears at her ceremony.

“I’ll never shut up about this,” she shares. “I’m a wedding photographer and I’ve been in the industry for almost six years and never in my career have I seen anything like this.”

“I wanted something unique and different than a ‘Florida’ wedding, and we totally got that and more!”

Dog Trainer Explains Why Dogs Turn in Circles Before Lying Down

(fotografixx / Getty Images)

Cole Reeves is a Pit Bull lover, advocate, and dog dad to more than 100 rescued Pitties, so he knows a thing or two about dogs. In this video, he explains why pups often turn in two or three circles before lying down, and the final reason warmed our hearts.

Circling before settling down is instinctive behavior. Reeves explains that when dogs slept outdoors, they would circle to flatten the grass and clear away anything hiding underneath it. They also sniff the air to determine whether anything has changed since earlier in the day. He then challenges us to watch our own dogs tonight and see how they position themselves when they finally lie down. He’s willing to bet they’ll settle with their backs facing us, and the reason why will make dog parents everywhere smile.

We’ll admit that the fourth reason brought a tear to our eye. Our dog, a Pit Bull mix, always sleeps with her back toward us, but we never realized it until Reeves pointed it out. Even when she’s resting, she’s protecting us; that’s her showing us how much she loves us!

Why Dogs Circle Before Lying Down

One commenter started quite an argument when they shared, “Completely wrong, everything. The dog does this to protect its stomach from predators. It is scientifically proven.” We think they may have meant that pups curl up to protect their stomachs, which is true.

However, the circling itself has nothing to do with protecting their stomachs. According to VCA Animal Hospitals, dogs circle for the reasons Reeves mentioned. Curling up in what is known as the “donut” position is more about regulating body temperature.

“Wild dogs in colder climates circled to wind themselves into tight balls to conserve personal body heat. The tighter the tuck, the warmer the dog. In addition, other pack members gathered in a tight circle to share body heat. So, in cold or hot climates, dogs had a biological reason for turning around before bedding down.”

Whether they circle once or five times, it’s fascinating to see how much of their wild instincts our dogs still carry with them!

Celebrity shark returns to South Korea canal after failed rescueJake Kwon - Seoul correspondent;

Authorities had attempted to lead the shark out of the canal

A famed dusky shark in South Korea has returned to the canal where she had been stuck for a month, just one day after authorities said they had successfully guided her out, local media report.

The shark, nicknamed Bukangi, became an unlikely sensation after she was spotted lingering in a canal in the south-eastern port city of Busan last month.

South Korea's oceans ministry said on Wednesday evening they had led Bukangi out of the canal into an open harbour - but reports later said the shark had swum back to the mouth of the canal, having apparently broken through a barrier installed by authorities.

Another operation to relocate Bukangi has been scheduled for Thursday.

It is thought that Bukangi might have been drawn to the canal by unusually warm waters and plenty of fish. With the sea getting warmer each year, experts say Busan may play host to more sharks in the future.

In recent weeks, more than 1.6 million visitors have descended upon a park in Busan to catch a glimpse of Bukangi, named after the canal in which she was spotted.

Her popularity gave a welcome boost to Busan's tourism, and the city has embraced her as an unofficial mascot.

But authorities were also concerned about Bukangi's well-being as she appeared to be injured and was not eating. There were concerns that she would be further weakened by falling water temperatures.

In a livestreamed operation on Wednesday, rescue workers took more than eight hours to delicately guide the three-metre-long (10ft) shark with a net towards open water in a harbour.

Hundreds of adoring fans cheered and waved goodbye to their shark, unaware that she would still be lingering in the canal by the next day.

Before Wednesday's operation, there had been two earlier failed attempts to guide Bukangi out of the canal with nets.

In This Studio, “The Dog Is The Boss,” And Every Pup Is Welcome, No Matter Its Age, Eyesight Or Ability (37 Pics)HidrėlėyWed, October 21, 2026 at 11:04 AM UTC

Every dog walks into a photo studio with its own personality, and Belgian photographer Paul Croes has a talent for letting it shine. Some of these four-legged sitters pose with the confidence of seasoned runway models, gazing straight into the lens. Others look slightly unsure about the whole affair, while a few steal the frame with a crooked ear, a puzzled tilt of the head or a perfectly timed tongue. Whether elegant, soulful or downright goofy, each portrait shows just how expressive our canine companions can be.

Bored Panda previously shared Croes’ moving Dogs and People series, which captured the bond between pets and their humans. This time, the owners step out of the frame and the dogs get the spotlight all to themselves. Among the stars of the collection are senior pups, dogs living with disabilities and others with unique physical features, each one a reminder that beauty rarely fits a single standard.

Before turning to animals, Croes built a career in fashion photography, and that experience shows in every frame. Dramatic lighting, deep dark backgrounds and carefully balanced compositions give the images the polish of a magazine editorial, yet they never feel overly staged. For the photographer, the goal goes beyond a beautiful picture: it’s the character and emotion that come through in a dog’s eyes.

Getting there takes patience. Instead of forcing anyone into stiff, unnatural poses, Croes gives every dog time to settle into the studio in Wiesbaden, Germany, and lets the personality come out naturally. Clients clearly appreciate the approach: the studio holds a perfect five-star average across 85 Google reviews, with many praising how calmly the team handles both pets and their owners. The result is a collection of portraits that are funny, touching, dramatic and surprisingly human, sometimes all at once.
